From the San Diego Union-Tribune, Nov. 14, 2015:
Mexico and the Philippines will soon join Balboa Park’s village of international cottages in an unprecedented expansion of the popular attraction that celebrates cultures from around the world.
The City Council on Monday unanimously approved the expansion, which will also include newly built cottages for Peru, Panama, Korea, India, Palestine, Turkey and possibly Lebanon.
Many have called the absence of Mexico and the Philippines conspicuous based on the large number of San Diego residents with ties to those two countries.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the nine new cottages is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday. The new cottages, which will be spread over five separate buildings, are scheduled to be completed by December 2017.
